The capital of Hungary, Budapest, was in fact two rival cities, Buda and Pest, straddling the beautiful waters of the river Danube. Dominated by the castle high on a hill, the city, often called “Little Paris of Middle Europe”, is famous for the monuments that reflect both local cultures and those of the numerous foreign powers which have ruled here for most of its existence.

Imperial Vienna, a truly elegant city, is one of the real gems of Central Europe. The city conjures up an image in the mind of culture, ornate architecture, elegant cafes, aristocratic palaces, imposing cathedrals and everywhere the romantic music of the great composers: Beethoven, Mahler and, of course Strauss – and to be fair reality is little different.

Then you head for Prague, often described as “The Magical City”, “The Golden City” or “City of a Hundred Spires”. It is, in fact, all of these and more. This stunningly beautiful capital has been a melting pot for innumerable civilisations: Slav, Jewish and German, since ancient times – all leaving their own unique legacies. Architecturally it is a marvel, and in terms of its sights, a revelation, with some six centuries of stunning buildings, ranging from medieval, through to baroque, to art nouveau.
